Romanian Kifla Nut Mix is a sweet pasty nut made with walnuts, cinnamon, and sugar. This nut mix is traditionally used in the Kifla bread recipe.

Hey Everyone!

Just wanted to share with you the nut mix recipe that is used in the Kifla Bread that my family makes every year for Christmas! This nut mix combined with the Kifla bread is a very old recipe on my Romanian side. There doesn’t seem to be very many of these recipes floating around out there, they are very hard to find. Last time I saw one, it was in an old church cookbook! Very similar to our recipe but slightly different. So I just wanted to get these recipes out there for anyone who is looking to make this!

Ingredients for Kifla Nut Mix

  • Walnuts: Chopped up small and mixed in with the sugars. Walnuts are traditionally used but other nuts such as pecans and almonds could be substituted.
  • Brown Sugar: Added to the nuts for a sticky consistency and sweet flavor.
  • White Sugar: Added to the nuts for a sweet flavor.
  • Water: Used to dissolve the sugars in and is the base for the nut mix.
  • Cinnamon: Added for extra flavor.
  • Vanilla Extract: Added for flavor.

What kind of nut to use in the Kifla Nut Mix

The Romanian recipe calls for walnuts to be used but you could probably use whatever is your favorite nut, as long as it is chopped up small. Pecans or sliced almonds would taste great! I suggest if you use almonds to use an almond extract with the vanilla extract, so 1/2 teaspoon almond extract and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. That might make it taste very much like a bear claw!…yum! Only do that if you want to get adventurous with this recipe and not make it the traditional way.

How to make Kifla Nut Mix

Add 3 cups of water and both sugars to a pan over high heat on the stovetop.

Bring to a boil, and then stir. Boil about 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and let it cool.

After it has cooled add cinnamon, vanilla, and nuts.

Mixture should be a pasty consistency.

After it is made let the nut mix cool, then spread it out on the dough and roll it up to make the Kifla Bread!
