Classic whoopie pies have a creamy vanilla frosting that is sandwiched between two little chocolate cakes. A quick and easy dessert to make that is super delicious!

This is a classic chocolate whoopie pie recipe handed down in my family. The cakes and the frosting are all homemade!

Believe it or not..I usually have all these ingredients on hand already, so if you need a quick dessert you might be surprised to find that you don’t have to visit the store to make these up!

These whoopie pies are so cute and make a great “make and take” dessert! They are basically like having your own individual piece of cake, except that you don’t have all the mess of cutting up the cake! A little bit different than just having cake or cupcakes.

So if you need a dessert for a birthday party or any event, these would be great to make!

These are actually way way easier to make than they look. The first step is just like making cookies, and then just mix up the frosting in the mixer, put them together and all done!

How to make Chocolate Whoopie Pies

For this first part, this is a lot like making homemade cookies. Cream the shortening, sugar, eggs, and vanilla in a bowl in the mixer.

Sift all the dry ingredients together, the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

Set aside.

In a small bowl, add the baking cocoa and hot water together.

Pour the cocoa mixture into the mixer with the sugar and egg mixture.

Mix together.

If you do not have sour milk, you can make it at home super easy! Just add 1/2 Tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice to a measuring cup, then add milk until it measures 1/2 cup. Stir that together and let it sit for about 15 minutes, then you can use it.

Alternating the dry ingredients and sour milk, add a little of each and mix each time. Keep adding the dry ingredients, then the sour milk, alternating until they are both all added.

Mix until everything is evenly distributed.

I found that scooping these worked best when I used my cookie scoop (which I love!), if you don’t have one you can just use a regular spoon.

I sprayed the baking sheets with a non stick spray and then wiped it off with a paper towel. A little trick I learned from someone, it makes it slightly greased but not overpowered.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 15 minutes. Remove from the baking sheet and cool on wire racks.

Believe it or not, my husband and kids ate like half of these cookies before I could even add the filling! They LOVED them and I almost had to hide some of them before they all got eaten!

They really are amazing with the filling in them though, so let me show you how to do that now!

In a saucepan on the stovetop over medium low heat heat the milk, salt and flour together until mixed together.

When it gets thick and creamy remove it from the heat and let it cool a bit.

When it has cooled, add it to the bowl for the mixer.

Using the wire whisk on the mixer, add in the sugar, shortening, vanilla, and marshmallow fluff.

Beat on hight until fluffy, about 7 minutes or so.

The easiest way to fill these I found is by putting the filling inside of a decorating bag, and then squeezing it out into the cookies.

Put your decorating bag in a cup and then fill with the frosting mixture.

Remove from the cup and cut the end so you have a small opening. If you want to get fancy you can add a decorating tip.

Squeeze out enough frosting to cover the underside of a cookie. My kids don’t like a ton of frosting on things (crazy right!?), so I only did a thin layer. You can make the filling as thick or thin as you like!

Take another cookie and place on top to sandwich the frosting in between.
