A creamy homemade chocolate frosting to top off cakes, brownies, and cupcakes. Uses simple ingredients and comes together in minutes.
I don’t know how many times I have made brownies or cupcakes and then totally forgot about the frosting for them! Many times we ate them with no frosting, but one day my kids really wanted them frosted.
I decided to dig into my mom’s recipe book and found my grandma’s homemade chocolate frosting! I was also surprised that I already had all the ingredients for it too!
A little heating up on the stovetop and then whipping it all up in my Kitchen Aid and it was ready to go!
This is super creamy right when you make it so you need to frost with it right away. If you wait, the frosting starts to get a little thick and hard to work with.
If you are mixing it and it is not creamy, you need to add just a little more milk until you see it start to get that creamy texture.
It also has a stronger cocoa flavor than that overwhelming sugar flavor that you find with most frostings.
Ingredients for Homemade Chocolate Frosting
4 Tablespoons unsweetened baking cocoa
3 Tablespoons milk
1 stick of butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups powdered sugar
How to make Homemade Chocolate Frosting
In a medium saucepan melt the butter, then add the cocoa, milk, and vanilla and bring to a boil. Set aside off the heat.
Add the mixture to a mix master, then slowly add in the 3 cups of powdered sugar while mixing on low.
Now you are ready to frost your brownies, cupcakes, or whatever fun treat you have! Be sure to frost it right away. The frosting tends to get a little stiff and harder to work with the longer it sits.
