Crispy oven baked chicken wings, seasoned and then smothered in BBQ sauce. Perfect appetizer or an easy weeknight meal!

These could not be any easier.  Just season all the wings and pop them in the oven and let them cook and then cook some more! I really like a crispy skin on my chicken wings..like almost too done. So I let these wings cook for at least 30 minutes on each side. So that is at least 1 hour of cooking time, or more to get that nice crispy skin.

During the last 20 minutes or so you can choose to brush on some of your favorite BBQ sauce..or not! They taste amazing without it too! I usually do half with BBQ sauce and half without when I make these for dinner.

In the summer you can even take these out on the grill with the same cooking instructions. About 30 minutes on each side. I always use a meat thermometer to check my temperature to make sure these are done before eating!

My kids also enjoy eating these. I always strip the chicken away from the bones and skin for them, so all they are left with are nice tender little pieces of chicken. A little bit of work for mom, but they are eating some healthy baked chicken!

What kind of Chicken do I use for Baked BBQ Chicken Wings?

I like the big wings that come in a family pack at the supermarket. Any kind of bone-in chicken would work well with this cooking method though. Try the drumsticks or even some chicken thighs cooked the same way. Just make sure you check the internal temperature before eating. It should be 165 degrees F.

Does it matter what kind of baking sheet I use?

It does! Just make sure it is a sheet that is large enough to hold all the chicken. Also, but most important, is that the pan has a side or lip to it. You do not want all that melted butter running off the edge into your oven! You can see im my pictures below what kind of pan I use.

Ingredients for Baked BBQ Chicken Wings

Chicken wings: I like the large chicken wings, but you could use drumsticks or thighs too!

Paprika: Seasoning that is sprinkled on the chicken for a smokey flavor.

Black Pepper: Seasoning for the chicken, use a fresh ground peppercorn for best flavor.

Salt: Seasoning for the chicken, use a ground Himalayan Sea Salt for best flavor.

BBQ Sauce: Brushed on the chicken towards the end of cooking for a BBQ flavor. I usually end up mixing Open Pit BBQ sauce and then a sweeter BBQ sauce together to get a nice flavor. Use whatever is your favorite or mix a couple of your favorites together! Also tastes great with just the salt, pepper, paprika seasonings and no sauce.

Butter: Melted in the baking sheet before adding the chicken to prevent the chicken from sticking to the pan while baking.

How to make Baked BBQ Chicken Wings

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Place the stick of butter on a baking sheet with sides. Stick it in the oven while it is preheating to melt the butter.

Once the butter is melted, add the chicken wings and season with salt, pepper, and paprika.

I cook the underside first so that the top part of the wing is the part that cooks last. This makes it easier when adding the BBQ sauce at the end you don’t have to flip them again.

Put in the oven and cook for 30 minutes.

Take out and flip all the wings over and season the other side with salt, pepper, and paprika.

Put back in the oven and cook for another 30 minutes. Check the temperature after 30 minutes with a meat thermometer to see if it has reached 165 degrees. Return to oven until it has reached 165 degrees.

If you want to add the BBQ sauce, take the wings out 20 minutes before they are done and slather on the BBQ sauce and return to the oven.

Cook until internal temperature has reached 165 degrees.

Serve as an appetizer or serve as dinner with a vegetable as the side, or a salad.
