Irish Soda Bread made with buttermilk, orange zest, and raisins. A quick and easy St. Patrick’s Day favorite!
You can’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day without delicious Irish soda bread! So good when warmed and served with butter on top!
This Irish soda bread could not be any easier to make, it took me a total of about 10 min to prep and then I just popped it in the oven!
I do have to admit when I was kneading the dough I thought I might have done something wrong, but these turned out perfect! Super moist with a hint of tanginess and so good slathered with butter!
I love celebrating St. Patrick’s Day! It could be because I am from the Chicago area ( they dye the river green here to celebrate!) or it could be because of all the yummy corned beef and cabbage.
Even though I am not Irish I still love to partake in all the traditions! That is why I make corned beef and cabbage and Irish soda bread every year for St. Patrick’s Day!

Ingredients for Irish Soda Bread
Butter: 1/2 stick of cold butter
Raisins: 1/2 cup of raisins
Flour: 4 cups of sifted flour
Sugar: 1/2 cups of white sugar
Salt: 1½ teaspoon of salt
Egg: 1 egg added for structure to the bread
Baking Soda: 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Buttermilk: 1¾ cup of buttermilk, I show you how to make your own down below!
Orange Zest: 1 teaspoon of orange zest from a fresh orange
How to make Irish Soda Bread
First let’s mix all our dry ingredients together. Flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda can all get mixed in a bowl together.
Next let’s mix all the wet ingredients together. Buttermilk, egg, orange zest, and raisins can get mixed together.
How to make your own buttermilk for Irish soda bread
If you do not have buttermilk on hand you can make your own at home! I added 1 Tablespoon white vinegar to a measuring cup and then add milk until it reaches 1 cup. That’s it! Super easy right!
Since this recipe calls for 1 and 3/4 cup of buttermilk I ended up making 2 cups of buttermilk and just using 1 and 3/4 cups of it.
Now we are going to dice up the cold butter into small chunks.
Using a fork blend the butter into the dry ingredients until its about pea size or smaller.
Now pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix together.
Knead on a floured surface. Mine felt a bit sticky so I added a little more flour while I was kneading it until it wasn’t so sticky.
Divide in half and put on a baking sheet with parchment paper.
This is the moment that I thought maybe I made them wrong since they don’t look like much..but don’t worry they will turn out perfect!
Bake at 375 degrees for 40-50 minutes.
Bread is done when it sounds “hollow” when you tap on it.
